School’s Out For Summer!

Well the OWU kids are off to the far reaches of the planet (Scotland, Argentina, Vermont, Dublin – Ohio that is) and I am on to the fun of summer research! This summer I’m honing in on: Trad jazz, the history and culture of those who lived along the Mississippi river (Native Americans, African Americans, Cajuns and that species called New Orleanians) with lots of clarinet, flute, saxophone, vocals, Cajun accordion and slide guitar to keep me out of the pool halls. So. Much. Fun.
The OWU faculty trio, Tour d’Anches, just finished 4 school concerts and I’m so excited to perform with these colleagues Karen Pfeifer on oboe and Emily Patronik on bassoon in several concerts this summer. In Portsmouth, Ohio, at the Dorothy Knost Children’s Music Workshop, we will be doing a session called The Wonderful World of Woodwinds and performing our trio rep plus a medley of Irving Berlin tunes that I arranged. Then two of our OWU students, Rachel Parfenchuk and Brianna Robinson, and piano faculty member Frank Chiou join us for an evening concert at All Saint’s Episcopal in Portsmouth. Thank you to OWU Alumni Derek Scoles, Amy Bergandine and Justin Wigit for hosting these events!
However, before all that I’m heading to New Orleans for the 5th Annual Trad Jazz Camp. Here’s a nice article and photo of my camp band performing last year. We are all about getting to the heart of this tradition while enjoying all the fun and celebration that is New Orleans!
